Title: [Breviary]. Use of Rome. Origin: [Northern Italy: early 15th century ]. Description: Illuminated manuscript on parchment. 264 leaves. 12 x 9 cm. Double columns of eight staves. Textblock: 7 x 5 cm. Binding: Nineteenth-century quarter calf and blue paper boards, gilt spine, single clasp. Comments: Written in a tiny gothic script. Contains both text and music. Musical staves appear in red, with notation in black. Contains a calendar following the use of Rome. This portable Breviary was used by a Franciscan friar in Italy during the fifteenth century. Its calendar bears later handwritten additions indicating the feasts of several Franciscan saints, incuding St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Clare of Assisi, and St. Bernardino of Siena, who was canonized in 1450. Decoration: North Italian gold initials on red, blue, green grounds, with foliate decoration, gold bezants, and pen work extensions. Border designs. Provenance: (1) William Blattner, Chicago, 1943.
