CrashPlan Pro
CrashPlan Pro is the new backup service for university workstations. In the unfortunate event that a computer crashes or a laptop is stolen, faculty and staff who have CrashPlan Pro installed could potentially access their data on a new system in less than an hour. CrashPlan Pro automatically backs up files that have been changed daily without any customer participation.
CrashPlan Pro has been installed on over 800 workstations. It is included on new computers issued to faculty and staff and has been an inte- gral part of moving a customer from one computer to another. CrashPlan Pro is available to all primary machines via the LANDesk portal, and the IT Help Desk can assist with the installation process. For information on CrashPlan Pro, please visit smu.edu/OIT/CrashPlanPro.
Forefront Client Security to be Replaced by Endpoint Protection
To keep SMU computers on the cutting edge of security technology, Forefront Client Security, the current antivirus software for Windows, will be replaced by Systems Center Endpoint Protection. This is Microsoft’s latest anti-malware solution for enterprise users. Endpoint Protection software will be available for computers running Windows, Mac OS X, and some versions of Linux.
With this upgrade, Microsoft improved its malware detection and effectiveness. It can detect and remediate malware, spyware, and rootkits (software that allows stealthy access to a computer), as well as automatically define and update engines from an on-campus server. As part of the larger scale project for Microsoft Systems Center, we hope to have software available soon to allow campus technical representatives to become early adopters.
