President Hartzell Shares
Strategic Plan Update

In a letter to campus, President Jay Hartzell shared continued progress on SMU’s strategic plan, outlining a framework focused on academic excellence, research, student experience and impact, with priorities including lifelong student success, Mustang culture, operational excellence and partnership with Dallas. 

The update reflects input from thousands across the SMU community, with a full plan to be introduced in September.

Academic Excellence and Research
  • Devin Matthews, associate professor of chemistry in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, is leading a $4.25 million NSF–funded collaboration with Carnegie Mellon and UT Austin to develop advanced computing tools supporting AI, quantum computing and other fields.
  • Cox School of Business B.B.A.s demonstrated experiential learning and national impact, with finance students hosting a 90-team pitch competition and real estate students earning first place at a separate inaugural challenge.
  • Reflecting the strength and impact of SMU's academic community, the Moody School of Graduate and Advanced Studies Awards Dinner highlighted notable mentorship, teaching, and national fellowships by graduate students, faculty and staff.
  • David J. Meltzer, a professor in Dedman College, has been elected to the American Philosophical Society, becoming the first SMU faculty member to receive the honor.
Arts, Culture and Scholarship
  • Meadows School of the Arts professor Jim Hart has been named the recipient of the George Ellis Award for Excellence in Innovation, recognizing his leadership in advancing social innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • The George W. Bush Presidential Center launched its ninth annual Forum on Leadership on the Heart of America, marking the lead-up to the nation’s 250th birthday with discussions on free speech, civic dialogue and leadership.
Innovation, People and Community Impact
  • Continuing more than 75 years of impact in the city, Dedman School of Law students provided free legal help to Dallas families navigating property title issues and protecting generational homes.
  • The Lyle School of Engineering and AECOM have launched a partnership to advance AI-driven infrastructure research and workforce development, connecting students and faculty with real-world challenges and career pathways.
  • Perkins School of Theology professor Frederick Aquino has been named the Edward and Emma Lehman Chair of Christian Doctrine for his work in bridging academia and faith.
  • The Simmons School of Education and Human Development partnered with Dallas Police to use virtual reality in officer training, helping improve de-escalation skills and safety outcomes while advancing research and community impact.

Community Notes
Faculty/Staff Honored with “M” Award
Five employees were recognized at the Hilltop Excellence Awards on April 24, receiving SMU’s highest honor. 
Shontel Grumhaus Assumes DEA Role
The advancement leader began her tenure as senior vice president for Development and External Affairs on May 1.
Marcom Now Under Academic Affairs
In a move to elevate the academy, Marketing and Communications — formerly in DEA — is now part of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.
Use Your Floating Holiday
If you haven’t used your annual floating holiday, you have until May 29. Unused hours don’t carry over. Check “Leave Balances” in my.SMU and coordinate with your manager.
Facilities Shares Annual Sustainability Update
The OFPM released its annual sustainability report, highlighting progress in LEED certification, waste reduction and energy management.
New OIT Tool Simplifies Software Installation 
Microsoft Intune Company Portal will replace Ivanti Portal Manager, making it easier to find and install approved software on SMU-managed devices.
New Access to DMN
The Dallas Morning News is now available at no cost to faculty and staff through NewsBank, as access via PressReader is discontinued. 
Blue Route Stop Added
The SMU Blue 442 Express Shuttle added a stop at 5401 N. Central Expressway.
