Office of the President

Dear SMU Community,

As we continue advancing SMU’s strategic priorities and prepare to introduce our strategic framework and plan this fall, we are taking a deliberate step to better position our central Marketing and Communications function for the work ahead.

Effective immediately, the Office of Marketing and Communications will be part of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. This move will provide a more direct connection between marketing and communications and the academic enterprise, which is essential to our goal of continuing to elevate the academy in all that we do. Provost Rachel Davis Mersey, a former communications dean and digital media scholar with experience spanning academia and industry, is well positioned to oversee this unit’s work and ensure strong alignment with our academic priorities.

At the same time, this move allows Shontel Grumhaus, in her new role leading Development and External Affairs, to focus on strengthening relationships with alumni, donors, and external partners and advancing the University’s philanthropic goals. Marketing and Communications will continue to work closely with her team, as that coordination remains essential.

With Vice President for Marketing and Communications Regina Moldovan’s decision to step down from the role after nine years of dedicated service, I am pleased to announce that Anthony de Bruyn will serve as interim head of Communications, leading media and community relations and strategic communications. Neil Robinson will serve as interim head of Marketing, overseeing creative marketing, digital marketing, and planning. Both are experienced leaders who bring strong institutional knowledge, innovative approaches, and a deep commitment to advancing SMU.

I am grateful to the Marketing and Communications team for their dedication and the important work they do each day. This step builds on that strong foundation and positions the team to play an even more central role in both enhancing and celebrating the University’s continued momentum.

Communicating with clarity and consistency is essential to advancing SMU’s trajectory. Our faculty, students, and staff are doing work that matters every day, and telling those stories well help us continue to attract exceptional talent, deepen partnerships, and strengthen our position in Dallas and beyond.

Thank you for all you do to support SMU and our community.

Sincerely yours,
