Office 365
office.smu.edu
This fall, we were thrilled to rollout Office 365 (O365) to the SMU community. O365 is a multi-featured service including: email (50 GB mailbox), access to Office Online, Office ProPlus, and unlim-
ited OneDrive for Business cloud-based storage.
Email service: Previously, alumni email service was available for one year after graduation. Now, O365 enables us to offer long-last- ing email service to students who graduated May 2013 and later. Between September and November, we migrated approximately 17,200 mailboxes and their contents. Prior to September, we exten- sively marketed this change and engaged early adopters. As each students’ migration date approached, we emailed each student out- lining what to expect and providing instructions for device reconfigu- ration. Due to reduced on campus storage needs, we are increasing
faculty and staff mailbox sizes.
Office Online: Students, faculty, and staff now have Office Online, which provides browser-based Office applications. This permits users to edit Office documents on any device, even if Office is not installed. Sometimes the desktop versions of the software are still needed; however, users can
switch between the online and full versions with a click.
Office ProPlus: SMU faculty, staff, and students also receive Office ProPlus, which allows installing the full Office suite on up to five devices on Mac or PC
platforms!
OneDrive for Business: Another benefit of O365 is OneDrive for Business, which offers unlimited storage and is tightly integrated with the Office appli- cations. It was enabled for students, faculty, and staff in early August. Files can be stored and accessed from anywhere and easily shared with anyone. In addi- tion to creating documents directly in OneDrive for Business or simply upload- ing them, users can synchronize files stored on the computer with those stored on OneDrive. In spring 2015, OneDrive for Business will replace Locker.SMU
for personal use.
