Vivian Anderson Castleberry Doctor of Humane Letters 1999 Status: conferred
Vivian Anderson Castleberry, journalist and humanitarian, has been a courageous advocate for the rights of women and children throughout her lifetime. A 1944 graduate of SMU, Vivian Castleberry served as women's editor of the Dallas Times Herald for 30 years, helping to educate the Dallas community about social and political issues crucial to the advancement of the entire human family. The recipient of numerous awards in the field of journalism, she also has been honored for her formative role in The Women's Center of Dallas, Planned Parenthood, the Dallas Women's Foundation, and Peacemakers. In 1987-88, she convened the first Texas international conference on global peace. She has made a fundamental difference by continually focusing public attention on the basic issues of equality and justice. For her sustained contributions to our search for human equality, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Vivian Anderson Castleberry the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
