Dear SMU Community,

For more than three decades, Samuel Holland, Algur H. Meadows Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, has been an integral part of Meadows and the broader SMU community, serving as a faculty member and leader of the Division of Music before becoming dean in 2014. Throughout his time at Meadows, he has led with vision, creativity and care, helping elevate the school’s reputation, expand opportunities for students and faculty, and broaden its impact across Dallas and beyond.

With deep appreciation for his years of service, I write to share that Dean Holland has decided to return to the faculty following the conclusion of his service as dean during the coming academic year. He intends to take a well-deserved sabbatical before returning to the Hilltop as a scholar and teacher, pursuing an agenda of research, writing and service. This change in role will also give him more time with his children and grandchildren.

Dean Holland will remain fully committed to the work of the Meadows School in the months ahead, working with us closely to ensure a thoughtful and successful leadership transition. I am also pleased he will remain on SMU’s faculty as Professor of Music, mentoring students and contributing to the intellectual and creative life of the University.

During his tenure as dean, he has guided the Meadows School through significant growth and change. The school has expanded academic opportunities, recruited exceptional faculty and students, invested in programs and facilities, and strengthened its financial foundation. He has also built stronger connections with Dallas’ vibrant arts community and raised the Meadows School’s national profile. Through it all, Dean Holland has remained deeply committed to SMU and to creating transformative educational experiences that prepare students for successful lives and careers as principled leaders.

There will be opportunities in the months ahead to celebrate Dean Holland and his remarkable contributions. For now, please join me in expressing our gratitude for all he has done for the Meadows School and the University.

We will soon launch a national search for the next dean of the Meadows School of the Arts. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of Meadows throughout that process. While this announcement marks the beginning of a transition, Dean Holland’s leadership leaves the Meadows School exceptionally well positioned for its next great chapter. I am grateful that his contributions to the Meadows School and SMU will continue for years to come.

Sincerely,
