Dear Colleagues,

Following careful consideration and thoughtful discussions, Nader Jalili has decided to step down from his role as the Mary and Richard Templeton Dean of the Lyle School of Engineering to return to the faculty and devote his full attention to research and teaching. During his tenure as dean, Dean Jalili has continued to advance a collaborative research portfolio with colleagues across Lyle and SMU, reflecting both his commitment to scholarship and to the broader mission of the University. This work includes, but is not limited to, a major federal research award—currently anticipated at $4.2 million—to strengthen U.S. manufacturing through digital twin technology and high-performance computing, alongside other emerging initiatives.

The growing scale and complexity of this shared research agenda now require a level of sustained focus that is difficult to balance with the full responsibilities of the deanship, and this transition will allow him to devote the necessary attention to these efforts while continuing to support Lyle’s success through his faculty role.

As Dean Jalili prepares for this next chapter, it is fitting to recognize the many contributions he has made to the Lyle School. Under his leadership, the Lyle School has significantly strengthened its reputation as a leading engineering school by expanding its research enterprise, advancing student success initiatives, and recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty and students. He has also deepened relationships with alumni, donors, industry partners and the Lyle Executive Board, building vital support for the school’s continued growth and strategic ambitions.

Together, these accomplishments reflect the dedication of the entire Lyle community and underscore Dean Jalili’s lasting impact on the school.

Now, the scale and potential impact of Dean Jalili’s collaborative research portfolio create a unique opportunity for him to devote his full attention to advancing scholarship and teaching, while continuing to mentor students and postdoctoral scholars. We look forward to seeing how his discoveries and innovations—developed in partnership with colleagues across Lyle—will further enhance the school’s national stature and contribute to its growth in the months and years ahead.

Dean Jalili has graciously agreed to remain in his role through August 17 to help ensure a smooth start to the academic year. We are grateful for his willingness to provide continuity during this transition. And, I am pleased to share that Dinesh Rajan, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Curriculum Innovation, has agreed to serve as interim dean.

The Lyle School is exceptionally well positioned for the future, supported by a strong community invested in its success. As SMU advances its strategic priorities, the Lyle School plays a vital role by driving research that matters, delivering transformative educational experiences, and preparing the next generation of engineering leaders to solve society’s most complex challenges.
