SMU Corporate Engagement

SPRING 2023 NEWSLETTER

SMU Corporate Engagement is your connection to SMU for cutting-edge research partnerships, strategic philanthropy, talent acquisition, and continuing and executive education. We connect companies, nonprofits and individuals to SMU faculty, students and staff who are ready to collaborate with business.

Around Campus:

Research Computing Day ’23 on April 21 drew a great turnout of corporate representatives, SMU faculty and graduate students to discuss our latest initiatives using high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and data analytics to address complex problems in multiple disciplines. Thanks again to NVIDIA, the company behind the DGX Superpod that fuels SMU AI research, and Mark III for their sponsorship and support of computational research initiatives at the University. Let us know at cfr@smu.edu if you’d like to attend similar programs.

Also on April 21, more than 20 undergraduate students from programs across campus participated in a student “trek” to the Bank of America/Merrill Lynch offices near campus. Students heard career advice, discussed employment opportunities and networked with top officials from both Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. Looking for top talent? Contact us to create a tailored trek of your own.

SMU’s annual Summer Research Intensive program begins June 6. The program gives University faculty and students opportunities to perform research and scholarly work on campus while also providing students the chance to hone their skills in research methods and oral/written presentation techniques. Please contact us to learn more about how your company can participate in the program.

New leadership, major funding for the Lyle School of Engineering:

Dr. Nader Jalili joined SMU March 1 as the new dean of SMU’s Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering. Jalili’s vision for Lyle includes enhancing research, especially in areas such as quantum informatics, digital manufacturing and clean energy. He plans to emphasize undergraduate entrepreneurship, leadership and innovation while expanding access to Lyle’s graduate programs through distance and online learning, as well as growing Lyle certificate programs.

Prior to SMU, Jalili was a professor and head of the mechanical engineering department at the University of Alabama. While there, he led the creation of the Alabama Initiative on Manufacturing Development and Education, designed to produce highly skilled workers through a convergence of research, service and pedagogy. That effort has guided multiple research initiatives that partner with industry in core areas of automation and human-robot collaboration, integration and augmentation.

Jalili’s arrival paired with the announcement of a landmark $20 million gift to the Lyle School from philanthropic and technology leaders Mary and Richard Templeton. The gift will support students, fund research and endow the deanship of the Lyle School.

“SMU provides the kind of robust education and research opportunities that are vital to the success and growth of Dallas,” said Richard Templeton, SMU trustee and chairman of Texas Instruments. The Templetons’ latest gift builds upon earlier commitments and creates the Mary and Rich Templeton Engineering Excellence Program.

Please reach out to connect with Dean Jalili or learn more about Lyle School research, students and activities.
