Alan S. Brown

Alan S. Brown, Professor of Psychology in Dedman College, joined the SMU faculty in 1974. He earned a B.A. degree at the College of Wooster, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University. He served as the Psychology Department associate chair from 1985-1992, and twice as its chair from 1992-1995 and from 1997-2003. In 2009-2010, he was the associate dean for Dedman College. He also served as the chair of the Sociology Department from 2010-2014. Professor Brown's research focused on the idiosyncrasies of memory, such as the deja-vu experience, tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon and cryptomnesia (unconscious plagiarism). His scholarly publications include more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as seven books as author or co-author. Professor Brown has given more than 80 professional conference presentations. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Psychology.
