William Lengfelder

William "Bill" Lengfelder, Professor of Theatre in Meadows School of the Arts, joined the SMU faculty in 1992. He earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Illinois, an M.S. in counselor education from Southern Illinois University and an M.F.A. in theatre arts from Lindenwood College. He taught movement to undergraduate and graduate theatre students for more than 25 years. Professor Lengfelder holds four black belts in various martial arts forms, and is a nationally recognized expert in stage combat and fight choreography, which includes skills in fencing, mime, boxing and juggling. He received the national Paddy Crean Award from the Society of American Fight Directors in recognition for excellence as an actor/combatant. Professor Lengfelder has been named a Meadows Distinguished Teaching Professor. His University service includes the advisory boards for SMU-in-Taos and the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports, as well as several curriculum and awards committees. Professor Lengenfelder also has worked with universities and professional theater and opera companies in the U.S. and U.K. as an actor, writer, director and choreographer. His honors include Dallas Theatre League Rabin Awards, Dallas Theater Critics Forum Awards and, as a member of the Irish dance theater company Fabulous Beast, three nominations for Olivier Awards. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Theatre.
