Michael Corris, Professor of Art in Meadows School of the Arts, joined SMU in 2009. He earned an M.F.A. in painting/media from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Ph.D. in art history from University College, London. An internationally known artist, art historian and arts writer, Professor Corris specializes in conceptual art and art and social practice. At SMU, Professor Corris taught courses in advanced studio art, systems theory, history and theory of creative computation, and criticism. He served as chair of the Division of Art from 2009-13. His work is included in numerous public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Britain in London, Le Consortium Museum in Dijon, France, and Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. A member of the International Association of Art Critics, Professor Corris lectures around the globe, and his writings on modern and contemporary art have been published widely in academic journals and national and international art publications. He has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the British Academy and the Arts Council of England. At SMU he received a Gerald J. Ford Senior Research Fellowship, a Sam Taylor Fellowship and a University Research Council grant, among others. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Art.
