Charles M. Lovas

Charles M. Lovas, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Lyle School of Engineering, joined the SMU faculty in 1977. He earned a B.S. at the University of Akron and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Notre Dame. Professor Lovas created and supervised the industrially sponsored Mechanical Engineering Design Program for mechanical engineering students, and the SAE Mini-Baja design challenge for engineering students. He received the Innovator Award from the Dallas Mayor's Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities. Professor Lovas received national recognition from the American Society for Engineering Education with its Fred Merryfield Design Award. The award honored his contributions to engineering design methodology and the teaching of engineering design. He has taught more than 100 national workshops in engineering design methodology for engineering faculty and practicing engineers in industry. Prior to joining SMU, he was on the faculty at Youngstown State University. Professor Lovas is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering.
