Barnaby Fitzgerald, professor in painting and drawing, is retiring from the Division of Art in 2023 after 39 years at SMU. He joined SMU as an assistant professor in Meadows School of the Arts in fall 1984. Fitzgerald earned the diploma di magistero in printmaking at the "Book School" in Urbino, Italy, in 1973. He received a B.F.A. in painting at Boston University and M.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Yale University. Fitzgerald received the Ingram Merrill Foundation grant in 1985 and numerous SMU travel and development awards. Fitzgerald has been the speaker at conferences in Italy, published a number of essays about painting in Italy and the U.S., and exhibited widely on three continents. His work is in several prestigious public collections, including collections at the Yale University Art Gallery and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; as well as private collections around the world. He has achieved illustrative contributions to various publications of works by Homer for Doubleday; Random House; and Farrar, Straus and Giroux. A.G. Hill donated Fitzgerald's painting Iris to SMU's University Art Collection at the Meadows Museum , and the museum will exhibit a retrospective of Fitzgerald's work in 2024. He retires as professor emeritus of art.
