STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD: CONNECTING DIRECTLY WITH STUDENTS
Working closely with representatives from our student body is critical to ensure we are meeting and responding to their needs. Several years ago, the CIO Student Advisory Board was created with representation from the Student Body President and 11 other student leaders.
They meet with OIT leaders monthly and provide valuable
feedback on a wide range of services that impact their
student experience. During the past academic year,
topics ranged from classroom technology, proctoring
services, undergraduate research opportunities,
online course improvements, student software,
and the use of Canvas, among several others. The
students continued meeting with us throughout the
summer as a plan for campus reopening unfolded.
“I leave those meetings feeling so energized and
excited about the work we are doing and the impact it
has on the student experience” says Rachel Mulry, OIT’s
Executive Director for Customer Service. “The students
bring such a valuable perspective, and this helps connect much
of our work and planning efforts to the individuals that matter most!”
The feeling appears to be mutual as indicated by feedback from past student leaders. According to Noah Wells, a recent graduate and former member of the CIO Advisory Board, “the partnership between OIT

and student body leadership is invaluable. As much
as students are benefitted by knowledge of the critical functions and resources that OIT provides to the
SMU campus, students can provide feedback on the implementation and strategic planning of these resources, both for current Mustangs and those to come. My own awareness of OIT’s broad influence on all aspects of
my college experience has been expanded through membership on the CIO Advisory Board and the ITLC, and as a group we have been able to communicate these
exciting new projects and technological opportunities to our fellow students. It is a mutually beneficial relationship that has already produced a tangible impact for both parties, and I am excited to see the partnership grow in years to come!”
